Support in Familiar Surroundings

Home setting offers an excellent natural learning environment for the learner. Caregivers can also benefit from observing and participating directly in their child’s therapy. Behaviors unique to the home environment such as facilitating sibling interaction, addressing family mealtime behaviors, or following household routines can be easily targeted.

Structured therapy in a supportive clinic setting.

Our clinic has both individual therapy rooms and group therapy rooms to accommodate a wide range of needs from our learners. The individual treatment room offers the learner a distraction-free learning environment, whereas the group treatment room offers valuable social learning opportunities to the learners who have similar skills, sharing in the group. For some learners, simply receiving service in a different environment other than the home environment may also facilitate important skill generalizations.

School-based services empowering academic and social growth.

Our teams have extensive experiences in collaborating with school teams. Sum of Learning also currently holds various contracts with schools to provide support to learners in a classroom setting. ABA support in school has the benefits of targeting goals such as increasing independence in following classroom routines and participating in group instruction, facilitating social interaction with peers.

Building strong foundations through early, targeted intervention.

Our Early Intervention (EI) Program is designed for children 2-4 years, offering an enriched and engaging social environment. Utilizing the Early Start Denver Model, this comprehensive ABA program focuses on increasing social skills, communication, and learning readiness. The goal of the EI Program is to foster independence and prepare the learners for a smooth transition into a school setting by the time they complete the program.

Guidance linking families with critical support resources.

At Sum of Learning, we take great pride in building a positive relationship not only with our clients, but also with all relevant stakeholders. Our BCBA Supervisors work closely and effectively collaborate with other professionals involved in the learner’s care (e.g., pediatrician, SLP, OT, school teachers, vocational coach). Through direct observation, training and consultation, exchange of treatment plans, and participation in multidisciplinary team meetings, we ensure a high level of coordination of care which is integral to the success and achievement of treatment goals, and is a fundamental part of our service model.

Our Approach

At Sum of Learning, we are committed to providing ABA services that are compassionate, individualized, and grounded in respect for each learner’s unique identity and needs. Our approach integrates neurodiversity-affirming principles, evidence-based practices, and assent-based care to create positive and meaningful learning experiences. We believe growth happens in a supportive environment where learners feel safe, empowered, and heard. By working closely with families, we ensure that our interventions honor each learner’s autonomy, preferences, and goals. Through this dedication, we deliver high-quality, personalized care that promotes lasting development and well-being.

Neurodiversity-Affirming ABA

Evidence-Based Practices

Assent-Based Practices

Our neurodiversity-affirming practices are rooted in compassion and respect for each learner’s identity, autonomy, and dignity. These approaches, including assent-based care, view challenges as arising from the environment rather than the individual. Our therapists and supervisors collaborate with learners and their families to create a safe and comfortable learning space, adjusting strategies as needed. We prioritize self-determination by incorporating opportunities for choice in every session and carefully evaluating the acceptability of goals and methods. By embracing individual differences, we provide personalized, learner-centered care tailored to each person’s unique needs.

At Sum of Learning, our treatment approach is grounded in evidence-based practices of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) to teach learner meaningful and functional skills across a range of developmental areas, including language and communication, social skills, self-help, motor abilities, cognitive development, and play. We adopt a non-aversive approach to addressing and reducing challenging behaviors, ensuring a positive and engaging learning environment for every learner.

Recognizing that each learner is unique, our clinical team works closely with families to develop individualized treatment plans that meet the specific needs of the learner and their family. Our highly trained staff utilize various approaches, including:

  • Naturalistic Teaching
  • Early Start Denver Model
  • Pivotal Response Training
  • Discrete Trial Teaching
  • Social Skills Training
  • Augmentative and Alternative Communication
  • Behavioral Skills Training
  • Verbal Behavior
  • Direct Instruction

At Sum of Learning, our staff prioritize assent-based care, focusing on cooperation rather than compliance. This approach centers on ensuring that learners are willing and engaged participants in therapeutic activities. Our therapists carefully observe each learner’s moment-to-moment behaviors and emotions, allowing them to adapt strategies in real time to meet the learner’s unique needs. By emphasizing the learner’s active participation and well-being, assent-based ABA fosters a positive learning environment built on trust and safety, creating meaningful and enjoyable learning experiences.
